The international football federation FIFA started organizing the World Cup in 1930. The football tournament that takes place every four years was first started in Uruguay.

There are three players who have participated in five editions of the World Cup. Two of them are from Mexico. Mexican players Antonio Cabal and Rafael Marquez have played five editions. Antonio played in 1950, 1958, 1962, and 1966 editions while Rafael participated in 2002, 2006, 2010, 2014, and 2018 editions. Germany’s Lothar Mathews played in the 1982, 1986, 1990, 1994, and 1998 editions.

Italy’s Vittorio Pozzo holds the record for winning the World Cup twice in a row. Under his management, Italy won the 1934 and 1938 editions. No one has been able to break his record so far. The record for most goals in the World Cup is held by Germany’s Miroslav Kolz. He scored 16 goals in the World Cup editions from 1930 to 2018. The first World Cup trophy was named Victory. After 1946, the trophy was named after Jules Rimet, the third president of FIFA.

Another interesting aspect of the World Cup is that England and Poland are the most-ever rivals at 13 times. There have been 53 hat-tricks in World Cup matches. West Germany and Germany have the most 7 hat-tricks. Hungary has five hat tricks and Argentina has four. The record of double hat tricks in a single edition is held by three players. Sandur Kassis of Hungary scored a double hat-trick in the 1954 edition.

In the 1958 edition, Just Fontaine of France entered the list. In 1970, Germany’s Gerd Müller scored a double hat-trick. Brazil is the only country to have played all editions since 1930. Brazil has played 109 matches in 21 editions and won the title five times.
