With the help of two goals from Bruno Fernandez, Portugal has secured a place in the last 16 of the FIFA World Cup by defeating former champions Uruguay. Both teams presented a model of high-level play. However, the goal was possible only in the second half. In the 54th minute, a cross made by Burno Fernandez surprised Uruguayan goalkeeper Sergio Rochet and scored a goal.
Superstar Cristiano Ronaldo claimed that the goal was scored after the ball touched his head, but Manchester United midfielder Burno was recognized as the scorer. Even though Portugal dominated the game, Uruguay missed some opportunities to equalize. In the first half, Rodrigo Bentaker’s excellent shot was saved by the Portuguese goalkeeper Diogo Costa. In the second half, when Maxi Gomez’s shot hit the post, Uruguay missed a beautiful opportunity to equalize.
Portugal got a penalty in injury time. Burno converted the penalty given by Video Assistant Referee (VAR) for a handball inside the box by Uruguay’s Jose Jimenez.
After this defeat, Uruguay, who has won the World Cup twice, is in danger of returning home from the group stage this time. In order to enter the knockout stage, Uruguay will have to defeat Ghana in the last match of the group, while Portugal will have to beat South Korea.
